Asleep in the shade

Oil on canvas board, 18x24cm

On those warm summer days, the sheep spend the entire day below the tree, in the shade. Their bodies look like furry rocks, one next to each other, keeping as still as possible. With their ears always listening, they turned around when I approached them. Too hot to make an effort and get up, too alert to go back to sleep.

Are they friends to each other? Or family? How do they feel about the others staying so close to them?
